Named a Best Children's Book of the Year, 2005, by the Children's Book Committee at Bank Street College. Named a Notable Trade Book for Young People, 2005, by the National Council for Social Studies. On December 26, 2004, a violent earthquake under the sea near northern Indonesia launched massive waves that struck more than a dozen countires. When the tsunami reached the coast of Thailand, two young boys were playing on the beach near their village. They heard the roar of the fierce wave rushing toward shore, so they scrambled up two trees and watched the water destroy homes and carry dead or injured people and animals out to sea. While the tsunami killed more than 150,000 people and left more than a million homeless, the horrific disaster also spurred people into action. This is teh story of how one family survived and, with the help of others, began to rebuild their lives. Ann Morris traveled with photographer Heidi Larson to Khao Lak to interview teachers and children who had been affected by the terrible tsunami. The story reflects their impressions of the situation and attempts to convey some of the personal experiences of the people who were involved. What Was It Like, Grandma? Series
